ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Şıra

Okay kiddo, şıra is a kind of drink that comes from grapes. It's made from the juice of grapes, which is called grape must. When the grapes are crushed, their juice comes out and it's put into a big container. Yeast is added to the juice, which starts to eat the natural sugars in the juice. As the yeast eats the sugar, it produces bubbles of carbon dioxide gas, just like when we blow bubbles out of a straw in our drink.

As the yeast eats the sugar, it also produces alcohol, which is what makes us feel dizzy if we drink too much. This process of the yeast eating the sugar is called fermentation. After some time, the şıra is ready to drink! It's usually still a bit sweet and fizzy, and sometimes people mix it with other things like lemon juice or ginger to make it taste even better.

So there you have it, şıra is a bubbly drink made from grape juice and yeast that tastes sweet and sometimes has other flavors added to it. But remember, it's only for adults to drink in moderation!
