2005 Malaysian haze

Okay kiddo, do you know what air pollution is? It’s when there are things in the air that can make it hard to breathe or see.

Well, in 2005, there was a lot of air pollution in Malaysia. This was called the Malaysian haze. The haze was caused by something called forest fires, which means big fires that happen in forests.

The fires were happening in a nearby country called Indonesia. They burned down lots of trees and the smoke from the fires went into the air. Then, the wind blew the smoke over to Malaysia.

The smoke was so thick that it covered the sun, making it look like it was always nighttime. It was hard for people to breathe and see things. Schools and businesses had to close because it was not safe to go outside.

This made a lot of people very sick and it was not a good time for anyone. The government tried to make the air cleaner by spraying water into the air and making laws to stop the fires. Eventually, the fires stopped and the air became cleaner again.
