ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

2013 Eastern China smog

Okay kiddo, in 2013 in eastern China, there was a big problem with something called "smog." Smog is like really dirty air that's hard to see through and can make it hard to breathe.

The smog was so bad that people couldn't go outside without wearing a mask over their nose and mouth. It also made it hard for planes to see, and some flights even had to be canceled.

The reason the smog happened was because there were a lot of factories and cars in that area that were putting out a lot of pollution into the air. When too much pollution is in the air, it can make the air really dirty and hard to breathe.

The Chinese government had to work really hard to try to clean up the air so that people could breathe easier. They made rules about how much pollution factories could put out, and they made people use public transportation more instead of driving their own cars.

It's a good reminder for all of us to take care of the environment and try not to pollute too much, so that we can all have clean air to breathe.
