The Afghanistan Papers are a set of documents that were released in December of 2019 by the Washington Post newspaper. They are called “The Afghanistan Papers” because they are secret government documents about the war in Afghanistan. The documents show that top U.S. officials knew about the failures of the war in Afghanistan even though public statements by those same officials said the war was going well. The documents also showed that U.S. leaders continually lied to Congress and the American public about the war, making it seem like it was on track to succeed when it really was not. The Afghanistan Papers have caused a lot of controversy because they show how U.S. leaders were not honest with the public about what was going on in Afghanistan.
