Anglo-Saxon law

Anglo-Saxon law is a bunch of rules and laws that people who lived in England a very long time ago made up. The Anglo-Saxons were tribes of people who came from countries like Denmark and Germany to settle in England. They made up their own rules and laws to live by.

In those days, if you did something wrong, the person you harmed could hurt you back or ask for some kind of payment to make up for the harm you caused. But over time, rules were made up that said what you could and couldn't do.

The Anglo-Saxon law also had rules for how to punish people who broke the law. Some punishments were getting hit or hurt, being thrown into a river, or being put in jail.

The law was not the same for everyone. Rich people had different rules than poor people, and men had different rules than women. The king also had his own rules and laws that he could make up.

Today, we still have some of the laws that the Anglo-Saxons made up a long time ago, but most of the laws have changed a lot to fit the lives that we live today.
