ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Apple Newton

The Apple Newton was a computer that was made a long time ago. It was called a "personal digital assistant," which sounds like a mouthful but just means that it was like having a little electronic helper.

The Newton was like a small tablet - kind of like an iPad, but way older. It had a screen that you could touch with your finger or a little pen, and it could do a lot of things like take notes, keep track of your schedule, and even tell you the weather. It was pretty cool because it was small enough to carry around with you wherever you went.

The Newton wasn't perfect though - sometimes it didn't understand what you were writing on the screen or it would give you the wrong answer to a question. People made fun of it and called it things like a "handwriting-recognition disaster". So eventually, Apple stopped making it and moved on to other projects.

But even though it wasn't perfect, the Newton was still important because it was one of the first computers that people could carry around with them like a phone. It helped pave the way for things like smartphones that we all use now.
