ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Biosemiotics

Biosemiotics is a way of looking at the world as a series of signs, or symbols, that carry meaning. It explains how living things use signs and symbols to communicate with each other and the environment. For example, a bee pollinating a flower is an example of a sign that carries meaning. The bee’s actions of gathering pollen carries the message that the flower is healthy and can be pollinated, while the flower’s sweet scent tells the bee that the flower is full of food. The bee and flower communicate with each other in this way. Similarly, animals communicate with each other through sounds and body language, while plants communicate with other plants through chemical signals. All of these are examples of biosemiotics in action!
