ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Breve

Breve is a little symbol that looks like a U with a line on top of it. It is used in music and has a special job. The music notes we use are like little pictures that tell us when to play high or low notes, fast or slow notes, and how long to hold them. Sometimes, we want to make the notes even shorter than they already are, and that's where breve comes in handy.

When we see a breve symbol on top of a music note, it tells us that we should play that note really short or for a very brief moment (get it? breve = brief). It is even shorter than other short notes like quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes. So when we play a note with a breve on top, we quickly make the sound and stop right away.

Think of it like a game of freeze tag. When someone tags you, you freeze in place and stop moving. When you see a music note with a breve symbol, you play that note just like you're playing freeze tag - start playing the note and stop right away.
