Carved stone balls

Carved stone balls are little balls made out of a type of rock that people used to make a long time ago. They were really popular in Scotland around 4000 years ago. The rocks were really hard, so it was really difficult to carve them into perfect round balls. But the people who made these balls were really good at it!

The balls were usually around the size of a tennis ball and had lots of little designs carved into them. Sometimes they had spirals, circles or zigzags, and sometimes they had knobbly bits or little bumps all over them. Each Ball was unique, which means that no two balls were exactly the same. It's really cool to think about how much time and effort must have gone into making each one of these balls!

There are lots of different ideas about why people would have made carved stone balls. Some people think that they were used as weapons because they are quite heavy and hard. Others think that they might have been used in games, like bowling balls. There are also people who think that they were just symbols of wealth or status.

Even though nobody really knows for sure why people were making these balls, they are still really interesting to look at and study. They give us an idea of what life was like a long time ago, and how creative and skilled people could be with the materials they had available to them.
