ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Charter 77

Charter 77 was a very important document created in 1977 by a group of people in Czechoslovakia. This document basically talked about all the human rights that people should have, like freedom of speech and religion, and how the government was not respecting those rights.

You know how when you play with your friends, sometimes they don't want to let you play the games that you want to play? Well, the Czechoslovak government was like that with its people. They didn't want people to have the rights that they wanted, like being able to say what they want and do what they want in their own country.

So, the people who made Charter 77 decided to write down all the things they thought the government was doing wrong, and explain how they thought things should be better. They wanted the government to listen to them and make changes to improve everyone's lives.

Even though it was a peaceful and important document, the government didn't like it. They arrested the people who made it and punished them. But, a lot of people still remembered the ideas that were in Charter 77 and worked to make Czechoslovakia a better, more fair place over time.
