ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Civilian internee

Alright kiddo, sometimes there are people who are not soldiers but they get caught in a war zone. They may have been living there or visiting when the fighting started. When they get caught, the people in charge of the military might not want to let them go because they think they might help the other side. So they put them in a special place called an "internment camp".

Now, when the people who are put in internment camps are not soldiers, they are called "civilian internees". This means that they are not fighting in the war, but they are being kept in the camp because the military thinks they might be a danger. They are not prisoners or criminals, they are just being watched to make sure they don't hurt anyone or help the other side.

The internment camps can be very strict and there are rules that must be followed all the time. The civilian internees may have to stay in one room with other people, they might have to eat the same food every day, and they might not be allowed to leave the camp. They might feel like they have lost their freedom, but it's important for them to remember that the military is trying to keep everyone safe.

It can be hard for these civilian internees to be away from their families and homes for a long time, but sometimes in war this happens. However, when the war is over they will be free to go back home and continue their lives.
