ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Comet (experiment)

Comets are like little dirty snowballs flying through space. Scientists built a special machine called a comet experiment to study these comets. This machine has a lot of fancy equipment made up of different parts just like your toys.

One part of the comet experiment is called a mass spectrometer. It works just like a scale to weigh the tiny pieces that make up comets. Another part is called a dust analyzer which helps to see what the snowball is made up of.

To study these comets, scientists have to travel all the way to space. They send the comet experiment machine along with a big spaceship just like your toy rocket. When they reach the comet, they release the machine and it flies around the comet like a little robot to collect information.

The information collected by the machine helps scientists to learn more about comets and their origins. It is like solving a puzzle and the comet experiment machine helps to collect the pieces of the puzzle for the scientists to put together.
