ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Costume designer

Imagine you're playing dress-up with your friends. You want to be a princess or a superhero, so you put on a fancy dress or a cape and mask. That's kind of like what a costume designer does, except they make clothes for the people who act in movies, TV shows, and plays.

Costume designers work with the director and actors to create outfits that tell a story or show a character's personality. They might gather inspiration from historical clothing or cultures from all around the world. They sketch out ideas and choose fabrics, like soft and flowing cloth for a fairy or shiny and metallic fabrics for a robot.

Once they have a plan, they start making the costumes. Just like when you use scissors and glue to make a craft, they use sewing machines, fabric scissors, and lots of tiny details like buttons, zippers, and lace.

When shooting or performing, the costume designer is there to make sure the clothes look good on camera or on stage. They might fix a button or hem a skirt, so everything looks perfect. The costumes they make help create the world the actors are playing in, and make the story even more exciting!
