Dhimmi

Dhimmi is a word from long ago. It was used to describe people who were not Muslim (not followers of the religion of Islam) but who were allowed to live in a Muslim country. The Muslim rulers of the country treated them with respect, and allowed them to keep their own religious beliefs and customs. Dhimmi people were kept safe from harm and allowed to practice their religion in peace.
