ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dialectical research

Dialectical research is a way of studying a topic or problem. You think of two sides to the topic or problem (sometimes called thesis and antithesis) and then look for evidence to support each side. You look for similarities as well as differences between the two sides. With the evidence, you can then make a conclusion about the topic or problem that combines the two sides in some way (sometimes called synthesis).
