ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Epiphenomenalism

Epiphenomenalism is an idea about how the body works. It suggests that even though our bodies have physical things like brains, muscles and hearts, our thoughts, feelings and beliefs are something "extra" that are not physical. This means that these things don't really affect how our body works, but our body affects how we think, feel and believe. So if you hurt your arm, you might think or feel pain, but the pain isn't actually coming from your arm - it's coming from your brain telling you that there is something wrong.
