ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Explained variance

Explained variance is a measure of how much of the total variation in a set of data is explained by the differences between different groups in that data. Think of it like a puzzle: all the pieces fit together and make a picture, but sometimes you can find certain pieces that make a big part of the picture. Explained variance is like that: it measures how much of the puzzle is made up by those special pieces.
