Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD deficiency) is a health problem that some people are born with. It is important because it affects how your cells use energy from food - like a toy that needs batteries to work.

G6PD deficiency affects a special enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). Enzymes are like tiny machines that help cells work properly, kind of like a robot helping to build a toy. G6PD helps cells turn food (like the batteries) into energy. In people with G6PD deficiency, the G6PD enzyme doesn't work as well, so cells can't use energy from food as easily. This can cause problems like anemia (low blood) and jaundice (yellow skin).

The good news is that G6PD deficiency can be managed with lifestyle changes and treatment. People with G6PD deficiency should avoid certain foods and medicines, and may need to take special medicines to help them use energy from food.
