Gulag

A gulag is a type of prison camp where people were sent by the government. These people often had to do hard manual labor. Gulags were often found in the Soviet Union and other communist countries during the 20th century. People who were sent to a gulag were usually sent because they disagreed with the government or had done something that the government didn't like. They were kept in prison, sometimes for years, until they were released. The conditions in gulags were very hard and many people died there.
