ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Highway location marker

When you drive on a big road, like a highway, you might see little green or blue signs every once in a while with numbers on them. These signs are called highway location markers!

Imagine if you were trying to give someone directions to your house, but you didn't have a street address. You might say things like "turn left at the big tree" or "go past the red mailbox." That's what highway location markers do for roads! They help people know where they are and where they need to go.

The numbers on these signs are really important, because they tell you where you are on the highway. The first number shows you what mile you're at. There are thousands of miles on some highways, so this number helps you know exactly where you are on the highway. The second number shows you which side of the highway you're on. If the number is odd, you're on the left side, and if it's even, you're on the right side.

For example, let's say you're driving on a highway and you see a sign that says "Mile 23, Left." That means you're at mile 23 of the highway, and you're on the left side. This can be really helpful if you're lost or if there's an emergency- you can tell someone your location based on the highway location marker!

So next time you're on a big road, keep an eye out for those little signs with numbers- they might just help you get where you need to go!
