Instrumental and intrinsic value

Instrumental value means the usefulness of something. It's like when you want to buy a car - you look at the cost, gas mileage, safety ratings, etc. Those are all instrumental values that could help you decide if you want to buy the car or not.

Intrinsic value means something has value just because it exists. An example of this is something like a public park. It doesn't have any practical uses (like a car does for transportation) and since it is publicly owned, it has no financial value. But it still has value because it provides a place for people to relax in nature and it's something beautiful that people can enjoy, so it has intrinsic value.
