Integrated pest management (cultural property)

Hey kiddo, do you know what pests are? They are small insects or creatures that can damage things like plants or buildings. And do you know what cultural property is? It’s things like museums, libraries, and historical buildings that are really old and important to people.

Now, sometimes pests can damage cultural property like old books or paintings. But we don’t want to use harmful chemicals to get rid of the pests because that can damage the cultural property too. Instead, we use something called integrated pest management, or IPM for short.

IPM is like a team that works together to keep the pests away. First, we find out what pests are around and where they are coming from. Then, we use things like traps or natural predators to get rid of them. We also try to make the environment not suitable for the pests by keeping things clean and dry.

But the most important thing is that we try to prevent the pests from coming back. We do this by making sure the cultural property is stored in the right conditions. For example, if we store old books in a room that’s too humid, that can attract pests. But if we store them in a room that’s dry and cool, the pests won’t want to come there.

So, IPM is all about working together to keep pests away from cultural property in a safe and effective way. It’s like having a team of superheroes protecting the things we love!
