ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Jus soli

Jus soli is the Latin phrase for "right of the soil." It is a law that says if you are born in a certain country, you automatically become a citizen of that country. This means you have the rights and privileges of everyone else who lives there. So if you're born in the United States, for example, you're automatically a citizen of the United States and you can get an American passport, go to school, vote, and do all the things American citizens do.
