ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nagoya Protocol

The Nagoya Protocol is an international agreement to make sure that people are treated fairly when they want to use something called 'genetic resources' in their work. Genetic resources are things like plants and animals, and the genes inside them, that help people develop medicines, fertilizers, new foods and other products. Before people can use genetic resources, they need to make sure that everyone involved is protected, which is why we have the Nagoya Protocol. It basically means that people have to get permission from the country where the genetic resource comes from, and they have to share the benefits they get from using it with the country they got it from. That way, everyone is equal and the country that gave away their resources gets something back.
