ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Natural born citizen of the United States

Okay kiddo, so being a natural born citizen of the United States means that you were born in the United States or in a U.S. territory (like Puerto Rico), or if your parents were both U.S. citizens when you were born, even if you were born outside of the U.S. For example, if your mom and dad are both Americans and they're living in France when you're born, you're still a natural born U.S. citizen.

This is important because only natural born citizens can become the President of the United States. So if you're born in another country or if your parents aren't both Americans when you're born, you can still be a U.S. citizen, but you can't be President.

But don't worry, there are lots of other important jobs you can have in the United States even if you're not a natural born citizen!
