ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Operation Midnight Climax

Okay kiddo, do you know what spies are? They are people who do secret missions for their bosses. And back in the 1950s and 1960s, the United States' government had some spies who were trying to find out information about other countries too.

One thing they wanted to know was how to make people tell them their secrets. They thought that maybe if they gave those people some drugs, they would be more likely to talk. Do you know what drugs are?

Well, they are like medicine, but not the kind you are supposed to take. These were drugs that could make people feel funny, like they were dreaming, or they were very happy or very sad. Sometimes they can even make people see or hear things that are not really there.

So, the government spies created a secret program called Operation Midnight Climax to test if drugs could make people talk. They built some special rooms in some buildings in San Francisco and New York City. The rooms were like hotel rooms with beds and sofas, and they were wired with microphones and cameras so the spies could hear and see what happened inside.

Then they hired some women who were called prostitutes to invite people to come and have fun in those rooms. These women gave the people drinks with drugs in them, and then they left. The spies outside watched and listened to see what the people would say or do.

Now, here comes the tricky part, kiddo. Some people were given drugs without them knowing it, and that's not okay. That's like when someone gives you medicine without asking your mommy or daddy first. It's not safe or nice.

When the government learned about this, they stopped the program. They realized it was not right to do this to people without their consent. They also discovered that drugging people did not always work to get them to talk. Sometimes people just acted silly, and other times they didn't say anything at all.

So, that's what Operation Midnight Climax was all about, kiddo. The government spies wanted to know if drugs could help them get secrets from people, but they found out that it was not a good way to do it.
