ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Penology

Penology is like when you do something wrong and you get in trouble, and someone has to decide what the best way is to make sure you won't do it again. It's like when your mom or dad gives you a time out or takes away your toys.

In the bigger world, penology is the study of what kind of punishment works best for people who break the law. This includes things like prison, probation and community service – basically anything that courts can order to punish people who do bad things.

The purpose of all this is to keep people from doing bad things again in the future. So if you broke a rule, like taking someone else's toy, your mom might make you apologize and take a break from playing with toys for a little while. This will help you learn that taking other people's things is wrong and not a good thing to do. This is kind of like how penology works.

Penology is not just about punishing people, but also about making sure they learn why what they did was wrong and helping them become better people. It's like helping someone understand that stealing is not a good thing to do, and teaching them other ways to get the things they need or want.

So, that's what penology is – it's all about figuring out the best way to teach people who broke the rules how to be good people again.
