ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Power-on self-test

A power-on self-test (POST) is like a checkup a computer does after you turn it on. It's like when you go to the doctor and they check your heartbeat and your breathing to make sure everything is working okay.

When you press the power button on a computer, it sends electricity to the different parts of the computer that make it work. The POST is like a doctor that checks to make sure all of the parts of the computer are working properly before letting you use it.

The POST checks the most important parts of the computer, like the CPU, RAM, hard drive, keyboard, and mouse, to see if they're working properly. It's like checking to make sure your eyes, ears, nose, and mouth are all working properly.

If the POST finds something that's not working properly, it will give you an error message or beep sound to let you know there's a problem. It's like when the doctor says, "You have a cold" or "You have a broken arm."

Once the POST finishes checking everything and everything is working okay, it will let you use the computer. It's like the doctor saying, "You're all healthy and good to go!"
