ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Qisas

Qisas is a rule in Islamic law that talks about something called retribution. Retribution is when someone does something bad to someone else, and that someone wants to get back at them for it.

With qisas, if someone hurts or kills someone else on purpose, then the hurt or killed person's family can choose to get revenge by doing the same thing back to the person who hurt/killed their family member. This is supposed to be fair, because the person who hurt/killed the other person will get punished in the same way that they hurt/killed the other person.

However, in Islam, qisas is not always the only option. Sometimes, if there is a lot of conflict between the families, it's better to try to find a peaceful solution instead of just hurting someone else back. Also, qisas only applies to situations where someone was intentionally hurt or killed – if it was an accident, then qisas doesn't happen.

So basically, qisas is a rule that says if someone hurts or kills someone else on purpose, then the hurt/killed person's family can choose to hurt/kill the person back as a way of getting revenge. But it's not always the best option, and only applies in certain situations.
