ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Readahead

Dear little one,

Have you ever played a game where you need to collect things and go to different places? You know that you have to be prepared and plan ahead, right? Just like that, there is a computer program called "readahead" that helps your computer get ready for what's coming next.

When we use computers, we often open a lot of different programs and files at once. And it takes time for the computer to find and load all those things when we want to use them. readahead helps to speed up this process by looking at what we've done before and what we might do next, and then loading those things into the computer's memory before we even ask for them.

It's like when you know you'll need to use a pencil and paper later, and you put those things on your desk so you don't have to go looking for them later. That's exactly what readahead does for your computer! It anticipates what you'll need and makes sure it's already there, so you don't have to wait as long.

Overall, readahead is like a smart friend for your computer that helps it be more efficient and less wasteful of time.
