ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ring (diacritic)

Okay kiddo, have you ever drawn a circle with a dot inside it? That dot is called a diacritic, and sometimes it can be a ring shape instead of a dot! This ring diacritic is used in writing to change the sound of a letter.

Let's take the letter "a" for example. Normally, "a" makes the "ah" sound, like in the word "cat". But if we add a ring diacritic above the "a", it changes the sound it makes. Now it sounds like "e", like in the word "café".

So, the ring diacritic is important because it helps us change the sound of letters in words when we write them. Hope that helps, little one!
