ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Snowmelt system

A snowmelt system is like a giant heating pad for the ground! In the winter, when it’s snowy and icy outside, people use these systems to keep their driveways, sidewalks, and roads from getting slippery and dangerous.

The way it works is pretty cool. Under the ground, there are special pipes that carry hot water or a mixture of water and antifreeze. When it’s cold outside and snow or ice starts to fall, the pipes turn on and start pumping the hot water through them. The heat from the water warms up the ground, and the snow or ice on top of it melts away!

This means that the pavement stays clear and dry, and people can walk or drive on it safely without slipping or sliding. It’s a lot like magic, but really it’s just science using heat to fight off the cold and snow!
