ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Standard-bearer

Okay, so imagine you're playing a game with your friends where you're all pretending to be knights or soldiers. Now pretend that one of your friends gets chosen to hold a special flag that represents your team. This flag, called a standard, is very important because it shows everyone which team you're on and people follow it to stay together.

The friend who is holding the standard is called the standard-bearer, and their job is to make sure that the flag stays up high and is visible to everyone. They lead the way for the rest of the team, and the people behind them can look at the flag to know where to go.

Now, in real life, there are also situations where a standard-bearer is needed. For example, in a parade, someone might hold a flag to represent their group or country. Or in the military, someone might carry a flag to lead their troops into battle. Just like in your game, the standard-bearer's job is to keep the flag up high so that everyone knows where to go.
