Washington Ethical Society v. District of Columbia

Ok kiddo, so there's this group of grown-ups called the Washington Ethical Society. They believe in treating everyone with kindness and fairness, and they also believe in making good choices for the planet and for people.

Now, in the place where they live, which is Washington, D.C., there is a rule about how much money they have to pay to the government in order to keep their building. But the Washington Ethical Society doesn't think that's fair, because they don't want to give too much money away when they could use it to help people in their community.

So they went to court and argued that this rule was unfair and should be changed. They said that the rule violated their rights to free speech and freedom of religion, which means they have the right to express their beliefs and practice their religion without the government interfering.

The court listened to their argument and decided that they were right. They said that the government had to change the rule and stop making the Washington Ethical Society pay so much money.

So in the end, the Washington Ethical Society won the case and were able to keep more of their money to use for their community projects. And that's how a group of people stood up for what they believed was right, and were able to make a change.
