ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wayland (display server protocol)

Wayland is like a special way for your computer to let all your apps and programs talk to your screen. It helps them work together in a way that's better than before. Think of it like a teacher in class who makes sure everyone gets to talk and share their ideas, instead of just one loud kid doing all the talking.

Before Wayland, there was another way for your apps to talk to your screen, called X11. But X11 was like an old teacher who sometimes forgot to let everyone speak, or got confused and gave the wrong messages to your screen. Wayland is like a new teacher who's better at remembering everyone's turn to talk, and gives the right messages to your screen faster and more accurately.

This new teacher also makes sure that people can't peek at each other's work on the screen when they shouldn't. Plus, Wayland is able to work better with newer and fancier screens that are more common these days.

So, Wayland is a new way to make sure that all your apps and programs work together nicely on your computer screen, so you can have more fun and get more things done.
