ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Åland War

Well, imagine you and your friend are playing with some toys together. You both have some great toys that you really like and you share them with each other. But then, a big kid named Johan comes over and decides he wants to play too. He tries to take all of your toys for himself, but you and your friend don't want that. So, you both team up and stand your ground to keep your toys.

That's kind of like what happened in the Åland War. Finland and Sweden were playing with a group of small islands called Åland (pronounced "oh-lund") for a long time. But then, Russia came along and decided they wanted the islands all to themselves. They started fighting with Finland and Sweden over who should have the islands.

But Finland and Sweden didn't want to give up the islands. They had been living there for a long time and they loved them. So, both countries teamed up and fought against Russia to keep the islands. It was like they were standing their ground to keep their toys.

Eventually, they were able to come to an agreement and the islands became part of Finland, but they were allowed to speak Swedish instead of Finnish. So, everyone was happy in the end.
