ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ōendan

Okay kiddo, do you like cheering for your sports teams or the people around you? Ōendan is like that, but for schools and universities in Japan!

So imagine that you and your friends go to a big school sports event, like a basketball game. There's a group of students who have special outfits and they stand together on the side, cheering loudly and doing fun dances. They are called ōendan! They sing and dance to support their school's team, and they do all of this without stopping or even taking a break.

The ōendan wear bright and colorful uniforms, with pom-poms, flags, and other fun things. They also have special musical instruments, like drums and trumpets, so they can make even louder noise to fire up the crowd. Basically, they want everyone to get excited and have fun at the game.

And the best part? ōendan isn't just about sports, they also cheer for other events like exams or graduations. They want to encourage their classmates to be the best they can be and show support for their school or university. So, ōendan is all about community, teamwork, and having fun!
