ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

1100–1200 in fashion

Well hello little one! So you want to know about fashion in the years 1100 to 1200? That's a long time ago! But don't worry, I'll explain it in a way that you'll understand.

Back then, people wore clothes that were very different from what we wear today. For starters, there were no jeans or T-shirts! Men wore long tunics that went down to their knees, and they also wore trousers. Women wore something called a "chemise" which was like a long undershirt, and then they wore a dress over it.

The materials that they used back then were also very different. They didn't have denim or cotton, so they used things like wool, silk, and linen to make their clothes. These materials were much harder to find and more expensive than the fabrics we have today.

The clothes that people wore in the 1100s and 1200s were also much more colorful than what we wear now. They liked to use bright, bold colors like red and blue, and they often wore patterns and prints on their clothes.

One of the most important things to remember about fashion in this time period is that it was very influenced by religion. Many people were Christians and they would wear things like crosses or images of saints on their clothing as a way to show their devotion. This was also a time when knights and warriors were very important, so some clothes were made to look like armor to make people feel strong and protected.

So there you have it, my little friend. People in the 1100s and 1200s wore colorful, patterned clothes made out of wool, silk, and linen. They were influenced by religion and knights, and they liked to wear things that made them feel strong and protected. It was a very different time, but it's always fun to learn about how things used to be!
