Okay kiddo, in the year 1660, there were lots of really smart people who liked to write books and stories and poems. They had a special name for these people - they called them authors!
Now, around this time, there was a big change happening in England. They had a new king named Charles II who had just come back from France. He was very interested in the arts and literature, which means he really liked books and plays and paintings.
So the authors in England were very excited because they thought the new king would like their work and maybe even support them. They started writing lots of new books and plays that they thought would please the king, and they also started writing in a new way that was different from before.
One of the most famous authors of this time was named John Dryden. He wrote lots of plays and poems that were very popular with the king and with the people of England. He even wrote a special kind of play called a "restoration comedy" that was very funny and made fun of the way things were in England at the time.
So basically kiddo, in 1660 there was a big change happening in England and lots of smart people were writing books and plays that were different from before because they wanted to impress the new king. And it worked - the king really liked their work and became a big supporter of the arts and literature in England.
