ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

17-animal inheritance puzzle

Imagine you have a big box full of different colored balls, each ball representing a trait (like eye color or hair color) of an animal. There are 17 different animals, each with their own unique combination of traits.

Now, let's say that you want to figure out which traits each animal inherited from their parents. To do this, you can take two balls out of the box at a time - one representing the trait from the animal's mother, and one representing the trait from the animal's father.

So, for example, if the mother ball is blue and the father ball is red, and the resulting baby animal ball is purple, we can infer that blue and red are both dominant traits and that the baby animal inherited one of each.

Using this process, we can create a chart that shows the inheritance of traits for all 17 animals. It may sound simple, but it can be quite the puzzle to figure out all the different combinations!
