1866 Georgia State Freedmen's Conventions

Okay kiddo, back in the old days, some people were treated unfairly just because of the color of their skin. This was called slavery and it was wrong.

But in 1865, the government said that all slaves in the United States were free. This was a big deal because it meant that people who were once slaves were now considered equal to everyone else.

So, in Georgia, a group of these newly freed people got together at something called a convention. A convention is when a group of people get together to talk about important things.

These freed people wanted to make sure that they were treated fairly and had equal rights. They talked about how they wanted to have the right to vote and the right to be educated. This was important because, before, they were not allowed to do these things.

But even though they were free, a lot of people didn’t like this change, and the newly freed people had a hard time finding jobs and housing. So, they wanted to make sure that everyone, no matter their skin color, had equal chances.

The Georgia State Freedmen's Conventions were a way for the newly freed people to come together and make their voices heard. They wanted to make sure everyone had a fair chance and the same rights. And eventually, their hard work paid off, and they were able to make some changes to give them more opportunities to succeed.
