ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

1980 Quebec referendum

The 1980 Quebec Referendum was a really big decision that people in the province of Quebec in Canada had to make. They had to decide if they wanted to become their own country or stay a part of Canada.

Imagine you and your friends have a special treehouse club and you love being part of it. But one day your friends say they want to make their own club without you in it. That's kind of like what was happening in Quebec - they were deciding if they wanted to leave Canada and make their own country.

There were people who really wanted Quebec to become its own country because they thought they would be stronger and have more control if they weren't part of Canada. But there were also people who wanted Quebec to stay in Canada because they thought it was better to stick together and work things out as a big team.

So, the adults in Quebec had to vote to decide what should happen. They went to voting stations and marked a piece of paper with their decision. In the end, most people decided that they wanted to stay in Canada and not become their own country.

It was a big decision and not everyone was happy about it, but it's important to remember that everyone has their own opinions and sometimes we have to work together to find the best solution.
