In 1990, some people in Venda (which was a small country in Southern Africa) didn't like the leader who was in charge of the country. So they got together and decided to take over the country by force.
They went to the government building where the leader worked and said they were in charge now. They made the leader leave his job and took over.
This is called a coup d'état (pronounced "coo day-tah"). It means a group of people taking over a government by force.
The rest of the world didn't really like this because taking over a government by force is not how things are supposed to work. So they put pressure on the new leaders to have a peaceful election where everyone could vote for who they wanted to lead the country.
In the end, the new leaders agreed and the people in Venda were able to vote for a new leader in a peaceful way.
