ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

1992 South African apartheid referendum

Ok kiddo, so before 1992 in South Africa, there were a lot of rules that separated black people and white people. This was called apartheid. It meant that black people couldn't do some of the same things as white people, and they weren't treated fairly.

Lots of people didn't like this, so in 1992 the government decided to have a special vote, kind of like a big poll, to see if people wanted to keep apartheid or get rid of it.

Everyone who could vote got to pick whether they wanted to keep apartheid or get rid of it. When they voted, they put a small "x" on either the "YES" or "NO" box depending on which they wanted.

The vote was really important because it would decide whether there would continue to be apartheid in South Africa or not.

In the end, most people voted to get rid of apartheid, which was a big change for the country. It meant that everyone could start to be treated more equally, no matter what their skin colour was.
