ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

2000 United States presidential election

So, a long time ago in 2000, there was an important election happening in the United States. It was like a big game of choosing who would be the leader of the country. There were two main players: George W. Bush and Al Gore.

People all over the country went to vote, which means they picked which player they wanted to win. But, something very strange happened. When the votes were counted, it turned out that the players were tied! That means they both had the same amount of votes!

Now, this was a big problem because there could only be one winner. So, they had to count the votes again to make sure everything was fair. But, even after counting the votes again, George W. Bush still won by a very, very thin margin in one important state called Florida.

However, some people didn't think this was fair and they thought that Al Gore actually should have won. They said that some people weren't able to vote or that their votes weren't counted correctly. This made a lot of people upset and confused.

In the end, George W. Bush became the president of the United States, but some people still feel like the election wasn't fair. It taught us all how important it is to make sure that every vote counts and that everyone has the chance to vote.
