In 2008, a lot of people in the United States got very sick because they ate food that was infected with a germ called salmonella. Salmonella lives in raw or undercooked food, like raw eggs or undercooked chicken, which can make people sick if they eat it. Around the same time, the government noticed that a lot of people were getting sick from eating some kinds of peanuts and peanut products, like peanut butter. It turned out that the peanuts were infected with salmonella, and that's why people got sick. The government then asked people to stop eating the peanuts, so that no one else would get sick. It was definitely not a good time for eating peanut butter!
