In 2009, a long time ago, something really big and important happened. You see, there was this thing called a "recession" which meant that a lot of people didn't have very much money, and things like houses and jobs were really hard to find.
But then, there was this guy named Barack Obama who became the President of the United States, which is a really big and important job. And he did a lot of things to help make things better for people.
He helped create something called the "stimulus package" which was like a big bag of money that was given to a lot of places to help them hire more people and make things better. He also helped create something called the "Affordable Care Act" which made it easier for people to get healthcare when they were sick.
All of these things helped the economy (which is like the way we use money and buy things) get better, and eventually things started to improve and people were able to find jobs and buy houses again.
So, in 2009, even though things were really tough at first, the country started to turn things around with the help of some good leaders.
