Do you know what food is? Food is something that we eat to feel full and stay healthy. But did you know that there was a time when people all over the world had a hard time finding enough food to eat? That time was called the 2010-12 world food price crisis.
Imagine you went to the grocery store with your mom or dad to buy food, but you saw that everything was twice or three times more expensive. You might not be able to buy all the food you need because you don't have enough money. That's what happened to many families all around the world during the food price crisis.
The reason behind the crisis was that not enough food was being produced to feed all the people in the world. At the same time, more and more people were born, and they needed food too. Also, a lot of countries were having trouble growing crops because of extreme weather like droughts or floods. When crops don't grow well, food becomes scarce, and people will have to pay more for it.
Another reason was that some countries were using crops like corn, wheat, and soybeans to make fuel instead of food. It's like having a candy bar that you can either eat or use to make your car go. If more people use it for their car, then there won't be enough candy bars left for people to eat.
All these factors come together and make it hard for people to find enough food, leading to a crisis where people have to choose between buying food or doing other things they need to do, like paying rent or buying clothes.
Governments and organizations all around the world worked hard to help people during the crisis by giving them food or money to buy food. They also tried to help farmers grow more crops by giving them seeds, machines, and training.
Now the world is doing a little better, and there is enough food for most people. But we still need to make sure that we don't waste food and that we grow enough to feed everyone, especially as the population keeps growing.
