ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

2012–13 Cypriot financial crisis

In 2012 and 2013, there was a big problem with money in Cyprus. A lot of people and businesses were borrowing more money than they could pay back. This made the banks in Cyprus very worried that they might not get their money back.

So, the banks in Cyprus asked the government for help because they did not have enough money to give to the people who wanted to take their money out of the banks. The government also did not have a lot of money, so they asked for help from a group of countries called the European Union (EU).

The EU agreed to help Cyprus, but they had some rules. They told Cyprus that they needed to make some changes to how they were spending money and taking care of their banks. One of the rules was that the people who had put a lot of money into the banks might lose some of their money to help pay for the banks' problems.

This made a lot of people in Cyprus very unhappy because they thought it was not fair for them to lose their money. Many people protested in the streets and there was a lot of confusion and worry about what would happen next.

In the end, the government and banks in Cyprus had to make some big changes to how they run things. It was a difficult time for the people of Cyprus, but they worked hard to fix the problems and make things better for everyone.
