2013 aflatoxin infestation

Okay kiddo, do you remember eating peanuts? Well, sometimes peanuts can have something called "aflatoxins" in them. Aflatoxins are like tiny bad guys that grow on peanuts and other foods like corn and soybeans.

In 2013, there was a lot of rain which made the peanuts soggy. When the peanuts are wet, the bad guys (aflatoxins) love it and they start to grow really fast. These bad guys can make people very sick and cause liver damage.

So, when the farmers harvested the peanuts, they found out that many of them had these bad guys on them. This made people worried because they didn't want to get sick from eating them. The government had to test all the peanuts and make sure they were safe before people could eat them.

So, the 2013 aflatoxin infestation was a big problem because it meant that many peanuts were not safe to eat and caused a lot of concern for people's health.
